Joseph Smith lesson #19 Standing Fast through the Storms of Life

Filed under: Faith, Hope, Gratitude, trials, lessons

Wilford Woodruff, the fourth President of the Church, said: “The Lord told Joseph that He would prove him, whether he would abide in His covenant or not, even unto death. He did prove him; and although [Joseph] had the whole world to contend against and the treachery of false friends to withstand, although his whole life was a scene of trouble and anxiety and care, yet, in all his afflictions, his imprisonments, the mobbings and ill treatment he passed through, he was ever true to his God.”

Can you think of different incidents in Joseph Smith’s life where he was allowed to be tried to prove his faithfulness to God?

How did he show his faithfulness?

John Taylor, the third President of the Church, said: “I heard the Prophet Joseph say, in speaking to the Twelve on one occasion: ‘You will have all kinds of trials to pass through. And it is quite as necessary for you to be tried as it was for Abraham and other men of God, and (said he) God will feel after you, and He will take hold of you and wrench your very heart strings, and if you cannot stand it you will not be fit for an inheritance in the Celestial Kingdom of God.’ … Joseph Smith never had many months of peace after he received the truth, and finally he was murdered in Carthage jail.

Quote #1 and question
Who will be tried?

“There is no safety, only in the arm of Jehovah. None else can deliver, and he will not deliver unless we do prove ourselves faithful to him in the severest trouble. For he that will have his robes washed in the blood of the Lamb must come up through great tribulation [see Revelation 7:13–14], even the greatest of all affliction.”

Quote #2 and question
Why will they be tried?

While suffering greatly during his imprisonment in Liberty Jail during the winter of 1838–39, Joseph Smith wrote to members of the Church: “Beloved brethren, we say unto you, that inasmuch as God hath said that He would have a tried people, that He would purge them as gold now we think that this time He has chosen His own crucible, wherein we have been tried; and we think if we get through with any degree of safety, and shall have kept the faith, that it will be a sign to this generation, altogether sufficient to leave them without excuse; and we think also, it will be a trial of our faith equal to that of Abraham, and that the ancients will not have whereof to boast over us in the day of judgment, as being called to pass through heavier afflictions; that we may hold an even weight in the balance with them.”

Scripture Helaman 5: 12 And now, my sons, remember, remember that it is upon the rock of our Redeemer, who is Christ, the Son of God, that ye must build your foundation; that when the devil shall send forth his mighty winds, yea, his shafts in the whirlwind, yea, when all his hail and his mighty storm shall beat upon you, it shall have no power over you to drag you down to the gulf of misery and endless wo, because of the rock upon which ye are built, which is a sure foundation, a foundation whereon if men build they cannot fall.

(What do we learn?)
(We learn Empathy, Grace, Patience, trust and become Refined)

(Who do we learn empathy for) The ancients, others, Jesus Christ

Quote #3 and question
What Does God promise about our trials?

“At that time the hearts of the widows and fatherless shall be comforted, and every tear shall be wiped from their faces. The trials they have had to pass through shall work together for their good, and prepare them for the society of those who have come up out of great tribulation, and have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb

How does Suffering prepare us for Exaltation?

Scripture 1Thes 4:13
13 But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope.

Questions and Quote #4
Where will those trials occur?
When will they occur?

“We know not what we shall be called to pass through before Zion is delivered and established; therefore, we have great need to live near to God, and always to be in strict obedience to all His commandments, that we may have a conscience void of offense toward God and man. …

Question and Quote#5
How will they occur?

Just a few days before the Prophet was martyred, at a time when he and the Saints knew that his life was in danger, Joseph took the hand of Abraham C. Hodge and said: “Now, Brother Hodge, let what will, come; don’t deny the faith, and all will be well

Are trials different for the followers of God?
How are they different?
Why are they different?

Is there a difference between Storms of life and trials?
What about trials and challenges?
How does weaknesses fit in and effect our individual circumstances?

Without giving names, what kinds of trials have you seen in the ward that you have been asked or felt the need to give support. (Try to make this a practical application of service)

How does God expect us to respond to our trials?

Remember not to murmur at the dealings of God with His creatures.

What does it really mean to murmur?
Is it more than complaining?
Is it really the doubting of God and his goodness and love?
What can we do to remind ourselves to keep from murmuring?

How do we express gratitude during times of trial?

Scripture Alma7:23

And now I would that ye should be humble, and be submissive and gentle; easy to be entreated; full of patience and long-suffering; being temperate in all things; being diligent in keeping the commandments of God at all times; asking for whatsoever things ye stand in need, both spiritual and temporal; always returning thanks unto God for whatsoever things ye do receive.

What should we be thankful for?

Why is it hard to remember to be grateful? What do we need to do to nurture gratitude in our hearts?

Trials are prone to cause discouragement, how can we overcome those feelings?

Joseph Smith stated

“All difficulties which might and would cross our way must be surmounted. Though the soul be tried, the heart faint, and the hands hang down, we must not retrace our steps; there must be decision of character.

What does the statement “decision of character” mean to you?

“Stand fast, ye Saints of God, hold on a little while longer, and the storm of life will be past, and you will be rewarded by that God whose servants you are, and who will duly appreciate all your toils and afflictions for Christ’s sake and the Gospel’s. Your names will be handed down to posterity as Saints of God

  1. I love how you’ve laid this out. I’m in YW in my ward, so I don’t get to hear the RS lessons. Thank you for sharing this here. It really puts the focus on what is right and true. Where we should all be placing our trust.
